I found this Santa the other day and he is so cute, so folk art. He looks very upbeat and happy. I have him next to my little tree. OOAK.

He is weighted at the bottom. The suit is bubble gum pink felt. The sleeves/arms are very unique. They are attached across the top of the shoulders in back & somehow they hang down to look real & well placed.

Instant Collections

Instant Collections have recently caught my attention thanks to shop owner of Rustic and Refined, Long Beach, CA. From my research, these are more popular on Etsy than ebay which makes sense since the sites each have their own focus and culture. I continued to search the web and found other sites selling or featuring instant collections. One blogger told about how she and her husband received an instant collection wedding gift and it brought tears to their eyes--the best gift ever. It was enamelware each with a unique design. I think there were about six pieces. It has given me new perspective.

When I took an antique class some years ago, the instructor always talked about instant family. She said people would buy a number of old black & white photographs for their home. Some were framed in glass frames and some in the old cardboard frames or even unframed; and then display them many times in a grouping for Instant Family.

Instant Collections could be practically anything; and the numbers can vary. Most collections are put together over time or sometimes, passed down from friend or family member. For treasure hunters and of course, collectors, a lot of the fun is in the one-at-a-time search. When I look around at the current world, I find Rachel Ray recipes, Fresh & Easy (my new favorite store) has more & more food with quick preparation time, I am a from scratch cook but I find I like the Steamers in the frozen section... I could site many examples but I see it as a way to balance quality and quantity. How much time do we have to shop, make dinner, entertain, decorate and collect?

If you collect, part of the fun is displaying our collection so others can see them too. Take a owl collection, one little owl on a shelf or in a display cabinet can get lost but a grouping gets your attention and takes on an importance. This is true for home or shop.

I would like to hear from you. What is your opinion on Instant Collections? Any interesting stories or even a photo that I could share on my blog would be appreciated.

In my outside garden room, I have this sign on the side of the house flanked by two black shutters. A little nostalgia here...This was the name of my brick & mortar store that I had about 10 years ago. It really pops & looks good with the black, metal & French motif.

7 Layer Salad with an Autumn Look

Oops, I really took a vacation from my blog but I am back.
This is a really great salad from the 1970's or thereabouts. One dish meal. Easy to make healthier too.

7-Layer Salad

(From a 1970’s cookbook)

Head of lettuce or chopped Romaine
1 c. celery, diced
1/2 c. bell pepper, diced
4 boiled eggs, sliced
1 med. onion, diced
1 pkg. frozen peas, thawed
1 sm. can water chestnuts
2 c. mayonnaise. See below…
2 tbsp. sugar
4 oz. cheddar cheese, grated
8 slices bacon

Tear up lettuce and put in large see through serving dish. This is a pretty salad. Layer all ingredientsin the order they are listed. Mix mayonnaise and sugar together and spread ontosalad. Top with grated cheese and real fried bacon, crumble on top. OR use the dressing idea below (myfavorite). You can make this the nightbefore.

DRESSING:

1 c. sour cream
1 pkg. Ranch style dressing
1 c. mayonnaise

Add to layer mixture on top. Best to toss before serving. Garnish w/little tomatoes.

I am happy to say I won a 2nd Place ribbon. The tablescape is very happy. The judges comments were favorable. The best compliment for me was that "it had perfect balance" as that was my greatest challenge. I had practiced on my table at home since January. When I got there the tables were smaller than remembered. I switched everything on the spot when I got to the fair to set up--I guess that was when the balance happened. Good thing! (because sometimes I scare myself when I do things like that). I added the big bunny cake pan 2 weeks before (I found it at Goodwill on my way home from work). I added the candle pedestal with the green bunny 2 nights before. Those were good additions. Everything else I had done way in advance. The Fair is such a creative, positive experience. I just love doing this!!

In fact, they had too many choices. I had to look away. I just swept up the pink one and kept going. I got carried away with snapping it at every angle.

I hope you enjoy my photos. I just took them tonight. My garden is nature unabridged (nice way to say not too tidied up). This year, I had decomposed granite put through out my yard. It looks like a park in some ways--the greenery really stands out. I have gone from grass to chips and now to DG. I recycle and reuse plus I have planted a number of drought tolerant California native plants.

Easter Dinner

I am invited out for Easter dinner. My contribution is my home made walnut fudge embellished for Easter. My serving dish is a deviled egg plate--c. 1960's Carnival Glass. I bought Easter mini cupcake holders at Joan's Fabric Store. Added Jelly Beans to the top when still soft; and colored coconut green (center) to imitate grass. Simple but enjoyed by most.

Pre-Easter spring-y Tablescape for Blog Party PINK SATURDAY

I took away a couple of things, added a couple of things to get a fresh look. The miniature hot pink carnations are real and from Fresh & Easy my new favorite store. I added the pink ceramic Easter basket and draped the string of pearls across it. The framed picture in back is actually an inspiration piece--a page from a cookbook. It shows a snack tray holding a couple of bars. I LOVE snack trays!! And a clear plain sherbet glass gains status by holding two homemade cookies with sugar sprinkles. So pretty and so simple. On my last post, I received a number of comments on the sweet angel so I took a close up shot. There used to be a Snack Tray Society or group. Out of Minnesota, I think. They had a newsletter and it was informative but I lost track of them. I had joined when I was more active on ebay. Does anyone know of this group? Does anyone else love snack trays? The one thing I remember that is interesting is that collectors who collect snack trays tend to buy them in two's. Click to enlarge photos. White and Pastel Tablesetting

I was at Harmony's Cottage today in Long Beach; and I bought these linens which inspired me to rearrange my table. White and gold with yellow and pink. I have always liked the pink and yellow combo but I don't see it that much in room decor--not just the two colors. The person who did the embroidery did a good job and then added a tatted edge in pink. (click to enlarge). The large pitcher is loving hands from an antique store in Orange Circle. It lost its bowl before I found it. The angel I had out for Christmas, and too sweet to put away. She is probably a 1970's angel. Some things I keep out, some things I rotate and some things are seasonable but my table always has some kind of an arrangement on it.

My Vanity Display

Lots to look at. People say they can spend hours in the bath just looking. Is that good? When you have one bath; things end up on the counter but I try to make them all pretty things. These have been collected here and there in my "treasure travels". I like the heads and hands. I also have a soft spot for lipstick holders especially popular in the 50's & 60's. The bath is two shades of pink; and no matter what I do have turquoise and yellow accents. A few things have been gifts & it all fits together. I always have animals in every room. Happy St. Patrick's Day

I again incorporated the holiday on the edge of my ledge in the kitchen. Leaving some "regulars", adding some green and adding some St. Patty's decor. The most noteworthy is the Walters Beer can collectible 1982. made especially for St. Patrick's Day. Still sealed. It was a small brewery in Eau Claire, Wis (my hometown). The brewery closed either in the 1980's or early 1990's. Small brewery collectibles are sought after on places like ebay. I keep it in my cupboard and put it out every year. St. Patty's Decorations on the front porch

I decorate for every holiday but more so in moderation. I leave up the usual yard art and porch art and just intermingle it in. I used to walk my dog, Chelsea, (you see her on my blog) past a neighborhood cottage where the lady had a tiny small front yard and she put out about 6 or 8 things for each holiday. No more. I admired that and people who can not clutter. Even though I am one of the clutter people. After seeing her home through many holidays, I went through my decorations & pared down. The green St. Patrick's day decorations look nice against my pink cottage. Easy to put up and take down. I have collected my things through the years from different sales/places at good prices. Every year I get my Valentine whatnots out of my cupboard and put them on the ledge in my kitchen next to the little animals and knick knacks that are there all year. The little bear with heart in hand is an Avon soap that my Mom gave me 30 years ago. The German Shepherd is from the 50's and was mine. The red and tan desk organizer was the family's in the 50's. The sweet little doll card was too cute to resist.

Vintage Valentine Table

Here I am a again with the same table but a different holiday. Valentine's has always been one of my favorites because of the hearts, red colors and pink slipped in. It is a sweet and romantic holiday. I have some of my basics on the table that I leave for every table setting (footstool, lace, candle holders, vase w/pearl branch). Why do I leave them? Probably because I don't have any place easy to put them. Now the truth is out. The rest of the things I got out of my cupboard many of which I have had since the 80's give or take. The only exception is the "female ceramic statue." Last week, I found her in a second hand store. Enjoy the photos. I like boxes and the simple things. Little did I know, I was recycling before I even knew it was an art form. I still have 30 or so Valentine Heart boxes in my garage. I hope to at least take them out to take a picture. So stay tuned.

When I went to Eau Claire, WI, I bought four of these panels. Two are curtains and two are runners. They are a semi sheer pink fabric with the hand embroidered ladies wearing purple hats. All hand done, vintage and one-of-a-kind. I couldn't believe I found something so pretty and unusual. I am trying to find a way to use these in my home.

Pineapple Cookies Recipe

Hi Diane,

Thanks for visiting. I appreciate your comments. Here is the recipe that you requested. Easy.

Ingredients

1/2 cup shortening
1 cup brown sugar
1 egg
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 (8 ounce) can crushed pineapple
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/8 teaspoon salt

Directions

Preheat the oven to 325 degrees F (165 degrees C). Grease cookie sheets.
In a large bowl, cream together the shortening and sugar until light and fluffy. Add the egg, beat well, then stir in the vanilla and pineapple. Combine the flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt; gradually stir into the creamed mixture. Drop by rounded spoonfuls onto the prepared cookie sheet.
Bake for 8 to 10 minutes in the preheated oven. Allow cookies to cool on baking sheet for 5 minutes before removing to a wire rack to cool completely.

I am looking through all my Valentine stuff this morning. I have about 25 or so cardboard heart boxes but can't bear to sell them and difficult to display. I have them on the shelves in my garage; and I look at them from time-to-time. If you have any ideas on how to display these for the holiday, please let me know. Some are newer, some are older. I brought out my two big hearts. They are unique because they are cut out of carpet material. Never used on the floor; just thought I would add that. Not old but kindda cool. I will put them on the table as "place mats."

The new year: time to set the table

The table has a few basics. I will add more. Probably the next table setting will be Valentine's Day. It has clear crystal. I added a couple of nice silk yellow roses to the vase; they had been elsewhere in the house. I brought the footed vintage dish home from my booth space at the antique mall. I was at dinner during the holidays and the hostess used a very similar dish to serve cranberry sauce in. It looked so pretty. I thought I would bring it home & use it in different ways. Right now I have a string of pearls in it. The table and house seems spacious after putting away the holiday decor. My goal is to rotate or find things in my cupboards to use. Plus I have a lot in my garage. No need to buy a thing... To be continued..........................

Today's Theme: Your Favorite Christmas music. One of mine is, O Holy Night but I have a new computer & no sound. Just hum to yourself.

These are little trees that I have bought at after Christmas sales or thrift stores. I purposely did not decorate them unless they came that way. They bring back memories of Norway Pines that were not only beautiful with their long needles but served as a wind block where I grew up in the country. The one with the silver angel at the top & silver decorations, I envision being like a "loving hands" tree. The sweetest is the deer family, gold speckled plastic, made in Hong Kong. I bought these last year in a thrift in Hayward, Wis. when I was with my two brothers. The tablecloth was a Christmas present last year. Click photo to enlarge.

REDNESDAY: My Christmas Pins Collection

I always say I am not a collector of anything. If I get six of something, I change and go onto something else. At heart, I am a vintage decorator. But as I look at this Christmas pin non-collection, I see there are more than six. Hmmm. Two of them are from when I was a teenager which has been a couple of years ago. A few have been gifts but most of them I have bought in my treasure travels. Starting Dec 1 every year, I wear one of these pins everyday to work. I can't say I have a favorite...each one has some charm. I hope you enjoy visiting.

Dark Chocolate Christmas Cake: Ribbon Candy Tree--PINK SATURDAY

I baked a dark chocolate cake 'from scratch' (eggless) with Scharffenberger cocoa. I just frosted it with a cream cheese frosting. I used old fashioned ribbon candy to form a tree.
Mom's Chocolate Cupcakes
I got this off the internet not too long ago. When I made cupcakes, they didn't come out of the papers too well (guess you can spray) but I double it like below and make a cake. Also good for two round cakes.
3 C. flour
2 C. sugar
2 tsp baking soda
Salt (I skip it)
2/3 C. Scharffenberger Cocoa
1 C. oil
2 C. water
2 tsp vanilla
2 Tab. vinegar
There were no mixing directions other than mix it all together which I do in order listed. Stir & blend well. Oil pan. I used 10 x 13 pan in the photo. I baked about 35 minutes at 350 degrees.
**Last year, I made this into a layered Christmas Tree cake (just use tree pans). The biggest challenge on this cake was finding the old fashioned ribbon candy here in Southern California. Many people do not even know what it is. Finally I found it made by Russell Stover at a Rite Aid in Long Beach on Spring Street. Also, Fresh & Easy was selling the German cocoa or upscale markets also sell it.

No Bake Cookies: Heritage Recipe

Beverly from How Sweet the Sound asked all participants to share a holiday recipe this week for Pink Saturday. My grandmother Martha made these. No fail. Make 'em big. Easy skill level.

NoBake Cookies

2 cups sugar
1/2 cup milk
1/3 cup cocoa
1 stick margarine
2 1/2 cups quick oatmeal
1 cup flaked coconut

Mix oatmeal and coconut inlarge bowl, set aside. Mix first four ingredients in medium sauce pan. Bring toa boil on low heat. Boil 3 minutes. Pour mixture over oatmeal and coconut, mixthoroughly. Drop by tablespoon onto waxed paper. Let stand until firm.

Happy Thanksgiving Table

Three turkeys (click to enlarge photo) arrived at my Thanksgiving table ready to set the mood for a happy holiday. The orange/red one, I have had since the 1980's--purchased at a local swap meet. Loving hands type. The crystal one, I bought last year at an antique mall at Orange Circle. The green one, I bought a week ago at a holiday bazaar. Alice, a long time antique dealer, was selling three of these from her own collection. All three turkeys are 2-part dishes. I have mixed the colors; and the theme seems to keep them united--added my usual embellishments. Happy Thanksgiving to You from Gracious Cottage!

Persimmon Cookies

Persimmon Cookies
(just as I received it from an older gal)
1/2 C. butter or margarine
1 C. sugar
1 egg beaten
1 C. persimmon pulp
1 tsp. lemon extract
salt
2 C. sifted flour
1 tsp. cinnamon
1 tsp. soda
1/2 tsp cloves
1/2 tsp nutmeg
1/2 ginger
3/4 C. raisins
3/4 C. nutmeats

Bake at 350 degrees on greased cookie sheet. Approx 10 minutes.
Yield: 6 dozen.

My notes: I don't use salt. Nutmeg is my lead spice but not overwhelming. I baked closer to 15 minutes. I never get the amount recipes say...I got about 3 1/2 doz. I have tasted them & they are so good!!

PINK SATURDAY: Pink Chenille Bedspread

I have loved Chenille since I was a kid. My Aunt Minnie and Aunt Mary always wore chenille housecoats. Relatives had chenille bedspreads on their beds. I can still remember the different colors and designs. It wasn't in favor for a while and then I think Martha Stewart "touched it." The rest is history. Chenille continues to 'hold its own' on ebay even the "cutters". I sold this one to a lady in Hawaii. She was happy with it.

Curves Holiday Vendor Fair

Last week, Curves members including myself were part of a week long Holiday Vendor Fair held at the 8161 E. Wardlow Road, Long Beach location. Marlene, owner, is very active in the community and supportive in promoting women's businesses. We set up in the lobby; and it was open to the public. I sold my Now and Then merchandise. I was surprised to find that my vintage jewelry and vintage linens were the most popular items even though I sold a lot of variety. We are going to have another one before Christmas. Jenny, employee and gardening author, baked & organized the event. Marlene is open to new members and new events. She has space available for small philanthropic groups to use to meet. Halloween Cat easy to make

This is my kitchen ledge that has little animals on it. Each holiday , I embellish it with seasonal animals. The stocking cat I actually made. If I act surprised, it is because I really am. I am not crafty but I made a number of these and sold the other ones. I bought a pack of black nylon men's socks and stuffed them with fiber fill. I took my old buttons and fabric scraps and hand sewed on the features. Each cat was different one-of-a-kind (not shown). I tied the bottom to make a tail. They would be a good project to do with children.

Thank you to Beverly for hosting this wonderful Pink Saturday Blog Party where we all get to post something pink and get to know each other.

This is my bathroom cupboard full of vanity items with lots of pink collected here and there over the years. I love feminine, romantic vignettes. The big plate is Bavarian and the Buffums bubble bath was from a department store that closed here 20 years ago. On the second shelf are pastel cotton balls (NIP from the 50's) and my second grade picture tucked behind the hat box. The third shelf has a hand that my sister-in-law made for me and a face pin in the shoe. I like hands, faces and mannequins large or small.

I see more and more pink in October. I bought fresh mushrooms the other day and the tray they came in was pink. All this pink in October helps to remind us that we all want a cure for cancer.

Show and Tell Friday: Garden 'from scratch'

Hi and this is my first time to participate. I moved to my cottage home 11 years ago. The majority of the yard is in the front and side of the house. There was one small tree that had to be taken out because it was plumbing invasive. It was a blank slate. Everything that has been planted has been since then; and I have added lots of yard art from thrifty sources like garage sales, thrift stores and found freebies. I change things out as they become too weatherized. A few years ago, I went "green" or grass less. It saves on water and labor. Today, I am sharing some shots from this spring. I live in southern California and I am happy that I can garden virtually all year. It is very peaceful; and my pets like it when I garden.

Apple Cake Recipe

This fresh apple cake I make over and over. I change it for the occasion or season. I found it in the Long Beach newspaper about 20 years ago. It has less fat than many cake recipes.

Chopped apple bundt cake
2 eggs
2 cups of sugar (1 cup brown, 1 cup white)
1/2 cup canola oil
2 cups flour
2 teasp baking soda
2 teasp cinnamon
1/2 teasp salt (I don't use)
4 cups diced apples (pippins type)
1 cup chopped walnuts
1/2 teasp vanilla
Sift together flour & baking soda; set aside. Mix eggs & sugar well. Add flour mixture, oil, cinnamon & salt. Sir in apples, nuts, vanilla. Mix thick batter w/wooden spoon. Pour batter into a greased-floured (this is important) bundt pan & bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour. Test w/cake tester. Remove from oven & cool 10 minutes before removing from pan. FOR WINTER/Christmas: I put it on a cake plate. When cool, I sift powdered sugar on it & then put white Jordan Almonds all the way around the base. This adds elegance, and it is easy. Spicy Cocoa Snaps Recipe

Dark rum and coriander add a surprising Caribeean flair to these slice-and-bake cookies.

1 1/2 cups all purpose flour
3/4 cup cocoa
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon coriander
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon cloves
1/8 teaspoon pepper
3/4 cup butter, softened
1 cup sugar
1 large egg
2 tablespoon dark rum
Combine first 8 ingredients; stir well. Beat butter in a large bowl at medium speed with an electric mixer until creamy; gradually add sugar, beating well. Add egg beating until blended. Stir in rum. Gradually add flour mixture, beating just until blended after each addition. Cover and chill dough 45 minutes.
Shape dough into a 13" log on wax paper; wrap and freeze log 1 hour or until firm.
Cut frozen log into 1/" slices, and place on lightly greased cookie sheet. Bake at 350 for 12 minutes. Remove to wire rack to cool completely.
Yield: about 4 dozen

A couple of years ago, I entered the Orange Country Fair Table Setting Contest. My tablsescape was entitled "Porch Supper." Everything was from the 1950's including the picnic ware. We had to do a menu and then set the table to coincide with the menu. There were very specific contest rules too. i.e. The table cloth had to have a 12" drop--no more, no less. It was so much fun!!

Trevor, top, is flat on his back on the floor. Izzy, below, is also on the floor under a chair. Temps Sunday were about 106 on my thermometer. "We don't need A/C because we live close to the beach." A local expression that doesn't hold true on days like this...

Both are rescue cats. Trevor's mother was a feral calico. A nice lady was able to retrieve and adopt out three of the kittens. Izzy's mother got out one time and was "wayward". Seven kittens later, they all ended up in a pantry at a woman's house who does rescue.

Ooooh.. Monah, I love tea and scones. Many years ago, I discovered a quick and easy recipe for scones in our local newspaper. They are delicious.

Here's the recipe.. This recipe makes approximately 10-12 scones.

2 cups flour
1 Tbsp baking powder
1/4 tsp salt
5 Tbsp unsalted butter
4 Tbsp sugar
3/4 Cup Frozen Non-Diary Creamer (thawed).
1/2 Cup white baking chips (optional)

Pre-Heat oven to 450 degrees.

In a bowl, combine the flour, baking powder and salt. Cube and cut in the butter with a pastry blender or fork until the size of small peas. Stir in the 4 Tbsp sugar and baking chips. Pour in the Non-Dairy Cream and stir by hand just until the dough is formed. Do not over-mix. Drop approx 1/4 cup of the dough onto a cookie sheet so you'll have about 12 scones.

Sprinkle lightly with sugar and bake for 12 minutes. Serve warm.

They are so easy to make and I make them all the time for myself to serve with a nice pot of hot tea. You'll have to try them and see what you think.

Scones: the best laid plans of mice and men (women too)

Lately, I can't get enough scones. I like scones at tea places, scones that other people bake and scones that I bake. That covers a lot of territory. Too bad I don't dislike a few things...I'd be skinnier. Anyway, the scones are all somewhat different in taste. When I search on the web for the Best British Scones---guess what? Lots of recipes come up even with that title. So this morning, I made a recipe that I have had for awhile entitled "Best Ever British Scones".
2 c. all purpose flower
2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt (I don't use)
1/4 c. butter
3/4 c. buttermilk (I had regular milk so I added 1 Tab apple cider vinegar & waited 5 min)
Even tho the recipe doesn't call for it, I add a couple Tab of sugar
Put dry ingredients together, add butter w/fingers or pastry blender & add buttermilk. Quickly stir to form dough. I roll out even quicker & cut w/a cookie cut. Put on parchment paper on a cookie sheet. Dab w/milk & I add pretty colored sugar. Bake at 425 for 10 - 15 minutes.
Where do the mice and men come in?? I went out to water some flower pots and overbaked them. #%$#%@@. Then you can't give them away, you have to eat them all yourself. The second pan turned out better but 15 is too long in my oven. More 10 - 12 minutes.

PLEASE let me know the perfect plain scone recipe I like them soft and light. This recipe is good but I look forward to hearing from you. I will publish a couple of recipes on my blog if you send them to me...Thanks...monah

Monarch China Plates "York"

I remember when I started as a dealer/seller in 1990, I had some of these but like so many things they get bought up & kept and we don't see them on the open market much anymore. This spring my friend took me to the Santa Ana Home & Garden Tour. My favorite house (shabby chic decor) had a long white washed table set in these dishes. The home owner had a full set & had inherited them from her grandmother or aunt. The colors are so rich and they look so pretty. (made in Japan).

I love it when I find household solutions to household problems. Let me start at the beginning. Long Beach, CA has VERY hard water. For years I have tried to clean the hard water build up off the inside of my Pyrex Coffee Pot with various products including Oxyclean, white vinegar and baking soda...I soaked, I scrubbed. It took days. This weekend, I bought a fresh jar of Cream of Tartar. I had a little bit left in the bottom of the old tin. I read the directions on the can and it says it removes spots from aluminum pans. I vaguely remember hearing about this from my Mom's era. So I thought why not try it. I just put hot tap water in the coffee pot with about a teaspoon of Cream of Tartar. It soaked over night. This morning, it is totally free of calcium build up. I guess the little things in life make me happy but I just wanted to share that.

Long Beach Garden Club Tea

Today was the first meeting for the new year. The club is celebrating its 75th year!! I am a brand new member. Myself and member Bonnie made tea items for everyone; and we brought in our tea cups and tea plates to share with the group. I baked the Chocolate Zucchini Tea Bread (very light; you'd never guess zucchini is the secret ingredient). And I baked the fresh Apple Tea Bread (very heavy almost like a kuchen). Both are easy and from the Mr. Food cookbook. I, also, made strawberry and peach jam (freezer jam). Bonnie (my tea partner) made four kinds of scones, fruit salad and brought in all the accoutrements. She did the table set up; I added the candles and pearls. If anyone wants any recipes, please let me know. Enjoy the photos.

I just found this recipe in my Mom's cookbook--another heritage recipe. I picked apples from my tree last night and made it. Easy & very good. I even substituted Light Land O' Lakes butter for the higher fat version.
Please let me know what you think if you try it.
Apple Pie Cake
1 C sugar
1/4 C butter
1 egg
1 C flour
2 TAB hot water
1 tsp nutmeg & cinnamon
1 tsp soda
1/2 C chopped nuts
2 1/2 C raw apples
1 tsp vanilla
Bake at 350 oven for 45 min
I made it in a round 8" glass pan. Serve w/light whipped cream. YUM!

Quiet and relaxing like the countryside. You can see the steeple of the castle house in the background. The corridor yard is my outside garden room. Lots of greenery and one-of-a-kind yard art. Many of the things I found when Chelsea (my dog) and I walked through the neighborhoods. Never under estimate the saying one man’s junk…another man’s treasure.

Setting the Table

This time I took it down to the table. The table cloth I inherited from my sister-in-law Betty. It is 1950's. I am using my Finlandia dishes that I bought about 1990 at Robinson's Dept Store. This pattern has been remade through the decades. The white plate is vintage petalware. I changed the candles to white. The intensity of the blue glasses really"pop." The faux red rose napkin rings hold white napkins with a lace edge. My Mom gave me the napkins in the 1980's. The footstool has lace over it and makes a nice riser. The other props are from my previous table settings. I will probably add and embellish as I go along. As usual, I shopped from myself. Everything here I had in my house. This is my 6th or 7th table setting this year all from my cupboards. If you have table setting pictures to send, I would like to share them on my blog especially cottage style where you found everything in your cupboards.

The Vintage Table

I just purchased The Vintage Table (Personal Treasures and Standout Settings) by Jacqueline de Montravel. Last night, I looked mainly at the pictures and only did a little reading. There are not as many photos of actual table settings as I thought there might be but there are a lot of ideas on how to put your own personal items together in a table arrangement. The idea so far is to take what you already have, make it personal and mix. As with Vintage Vavoom, the glossy photos are beautiful. Tonight, I will do more reading on their tips of putting it all together. Fellow bloggers, have you seen the book and what ideas did you get from it?

Green Kitchen

A colleague, a very sweet soul, just gave me the green nested chicken. It looks stately & sets high on my black plate rack along with a green jar/lid (maybe cheese came in it some years ago, the Jadeite cup & saucer, the Hall cream pitcher and white milk glass sugar. The greens are compatible but the camera really shows the contrast in greens. Interesting. The setting is all part of vignette on my old cupboard. My kitchen has green walls and red accents but there is some yellow & blue too. The blue canisters stacked here are my play set from childhood. Still staying with the Lily of the Valley theme, I made a couple of changes to the table setting or table scape. I added cups & saucers from the 1940’s (or could be 1930’s)—Royal Heidelberg. The pattern is Lilly; this was my mother’s name—spelled the same way. I originally bought a partial set at a thrift store & later bought some off of ebay. When I got them I learned they were a little newer but didn’t care as I just wanted to add to the set. I also added the green Lily of the Valley water glasses. I envision them being ‘gift with purchase’ like in a box of soap in the 1940’s but not sure of their origin. I got them at an antique store years ago. I added the gold mirror under the pitcher (May Co 69 cents). The French Roses, I picked from my garden & added to the vase. Your comments and questions are welcome. (click to enlarge photo)

The porch overlooks the front yard and garden. The lace tablecloth was attached to another unknown piece of fabric, cut off, washed & put over my Hayward table (Hayward, Wi). The chairs were picked up up at garage sales or thrift stores. The vintage 50’s vase has a chip but still pretty and those imperfections don’t really matter outside—imperfections are given a pass outside. The pillows & cushions are used until the weather wears them out.

Mary Lou Heard Rose

Mary Lou Heard is locally famous in southern California for being a master gardener. She ran Heard’s Nursery for years; and we have a local garden tour each spring in her honor & her name. I got this rose when it came out (maybe going on 10 years ago). It waxes and wanes. Sometimes, it looks diseased & I cut it back regardless of the month—which is what I did recently. Then it grows & blooms like it is now. The roses are English style and the color is more magenta than it looks on my photos. I have them on my cottage table. I would enjoy hearing from anyone who has this rose, and what your experience has been.

My Hayward Table

I put my wooden antique (little wobbly) table from Hayward, Wisconsin on my porch yesterday. I bought it last October at The Salvation Army, if I remember correctly. It was not like a commercial building. The store was in a cabin house type location--really cute. I think it was $15. My brother & sister-in-law brought it across country to me in December. I just polished it with Orange Oil. It has lots of character. Two of the legs are the same at the bottom and then the other two legs are the same at the bottom. I will add a vintage tablecloth later.

Growing Ferns Can Be Easy

Ferns...For years I couldn't grow them but I guess I finally got the conditions optimal, and have a system figured out. The ferns are by the back door in an area that has some shade and protection from the heat. The fern in the first photo, I have had for years, I just clip it down when it starts to get brown & leggy. I water it daily but not on the leaves. It goes and goes. The other one (more unusual) I got at the Carlsbad Street Fair a couple of years ago. I don't clip it but it responds in like manner. I put in fertilizer sticks a few times a year. The greenery softens the back landing & they are good greeters every time you go in and out. Before Ferns were difficult, now they are easy. Home made Mayo & healthy too

Cooking from Gracious Cottage: Homemade Mayonnaise
I made a recipe similar to my Mom's c. 1950's cooked salad dressing recipe & I think sometimes even called boiled salad dressing. My long time friend, Pat of Irvine, gave me Citrus flavored 100% California Virgin Olive Oil from Temecula. I especially notice the orange flavor. Yumm. You can use just regular olive oil. The citrus is outspoken.

Mix 1 tab of sugar, 1/2 tsp salt (optional), 1/2 tsp pepper or extra, 1 small tsp French mustard (I used dry) w/ 3 tsp of olive oil
Beat 3 eggs until light, then add a cup of milk (I used evaporated), stir well, then add seasoning & olive oil
Put in double boiler w/water already boiling & add 2/3 cup of vinegar (I used rice wine vinegar)
Stir until thickens, (takes a while), set in pan of cold water & beat for 2 minutes
This will keep for several days in refrigerator. I am using on pasta & also good for potato salad

You know what is it in and all real ingredients.

Black Dress Mannequins

I am seeing how hard it is to photograph rooms or even parts of rooms. What looks nice to the eye is totally different on camera—so most of them I deleted. Here is a vignette or grouping made up of 3 metal dress mannequins made by Home Interiors and purchased on ebay a few years ago. They are between my French girls. The walls are lavender.

In the 70's, when I was a young gal & setting up my first apartment, my Mom gave me an extra pancake turner that she had. Probably considered a "starter" one. It had a wooden handle and very basic. For years, the metal part started to move when you pressed a hamburger but it hung in there until recently. One day upon use, it quietly broke in two pieces and needless to say had to be thrown away. It gives me a whole new perspective on short term and long term.

Close ups of Izzy--the scratcher. Memorize what she looks like. You may choose not to let her in or near your furniture. But on the amazing side of Izzy, she still misses our dog Chelsea who has been gone 1 1/2 yrs. I try never to under estimate the intelligence of animals.

Trevor in the Outside Garden Room

French Rose & Mexican Sage in bloom

The pink French Rose has really burst into bloom the last few days. It grows in clusters and is made up of little roses--they form bouquets. I got it at Country Roads Nursery a few years ago. It is between a climber and a bush rose. The Mexican Sage is planted in "bad soil" and it flourishes every year & is always the biggest such in the neighborhood. Hope you enjoy looking.
